Oil on Canvas - 48 X 36"
This was the first in my "Rhythm and Hues" series. The painting utilizes a simple rectangular grid structure where each tile is painted a different color determined by chance. I wanted to take my mind out of the process of placing the colors to achieve a natural order and to allow for unexpected discovery. I was thinking of music first, but also the way light is reflected from the changing tree leaves in autumn. Prior to this painting I had always thought of visual rhythm as existing sequentially, but visual rhythm can exist free of ordered progressions.
