Aviara: Another course designed by the team of Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, this resort layout is located near the Southern California coast in Orange County near the golfing wonderland of Carlsbad.  As a part of the Four Seasons Resort the course was rated as one of the best new resort courses in 1991 and 1992 by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.  The first and last holes parallel Batiquitos Lagoon, while each side of the course is routed through the coastal topography surrounding the hotel.  Fairways are lush, greens very large.  Elevation rises to a high point at the sixth on the front side and descends back to the clubhouse.  The back nine flows through a valley out and back on the opposite side of the resort grounds.  Many holes feature man-made water hazards of trickling streams and ponds, which is like playing golf in a beautifully manicured garden.  So although naturalness is not a characteristic of this traversal, the setting among surrounding suburbs and hills in nevertheless extraordinarily picturesque.  There are some semi-blind shots from the tees and an unusual double-green which serves the 12th and the 15th.  The 18th is a tough finishing hole that plays back to the magnificent Clubhouse between the Lagoon and a double-tiered green that rests beside a gorgeous rock-lined pond with waterfalls to several levels. The course is rated 74.2 with a slope of 137 from the Palmer (back) tees.
