Cog Hill; Dubsdread: Opened as part of a four-course complex in 1964, this 7,073 yard, par-72 layout is always ranked among the top Public Courses and among the very best of all in the United States. The famed Dick Wilson along with Joe Lee designed the tract over the lush rolling, richly treed landscape. Indeed it is the trees and constantly varying elevations that characterize the course. Tees are set back among the trees and demand long accurate drives through the shoot-like openings to narrow undulating fairways. Missing the fairways often means missing the greens, which are protected by closely overhanging branches as well as deep bunkers. Even on the green there is little relief. The greens vary widely in shapes and sizes. In general they are extremely large and with many undulations, ridges and tiers, they are among the most difficult on the tour. The testy par-3 Sixth is one of the toughest holes on the course. The green is large and allows a variety of pin placements. When the pin is set on the right only a fade from the tee has a chance of getting close and it must carry the full 213 yards over surrounding bunkers. When the pin is set toward the back where the green slopes steeply down toward the front, distance can stretch to 226 yards and over-shooting the flag can be disastrously dangerous. The 190 yard Fourteenth is another difficult par-3 with a tiered green that can make getting down in two putts the exception rather than the rule. Since 1991 the Dubsdread course has been the site of the Western Open on the PGA Tour and is played annually in the summer.
