Santa Anita: This course is located near the famous Santa Anita Horse racing track in Arcadia, California just west of Pasadena. It was designed by William F. Bell, opened in 1938 and is one of the best of many courses managed by Los Angeles County. Although the yardage appears short on the card, the fairways are very undulating and level lies are rare. Also almost all of the greens are elevated on all sides. So if an approach shot doesn't hit the mostly small greens the ball is deflected down away from the green where getting up and down can be very tough. I was told that the fairways are so lumpy because the course was built on dirt that covered an old automobile junk yard. Certainly the middle of the dog-leg right 18th could contain several buried roadsters. The course is well maintained with fast greens and has a lot of nice accommodations. I first played here in April of 2007 and it has fast become one of my favorite places to play.
