St. Andrews: The New Course was constructed after the purchase by the Town Council of the liksland north and west of the city to the bay. The routing follows roughly along the contour of the Old Course with no constructed boundaries between the two. Often wayward shots from both find lies on fairways of the other course. The major difference between the two courses is that the New Course does not have the combined fairways of its older mate, which makes driving the ball off the tee much more difficult. As a consequence the New Course, though shorter in length, is arguably more difficult. Also the greens serve only a single hole with one exception, the 3rd & 15th, which means they are smaller and the rough surrounding them closer to the putting surface. The combination of tighter fairways, smaller greens and deeper rough always more in play give the New Course a completely different character than that of the Old...perhaps a greater challenge as well. If not for the tradition and fame of its elder neighbor the New Course would be far better known and respected among the higher echelon of the world's greatest courses.
